The Wild Food Association (WFA) is a new non-profit organization focused on developing a more in-depth understanding of the value of naturally occurring sources of nutrition in Canada, North America, and around the globe. Our initial goals include both enhancing the availability of data and information about wild foods, and enhancing our capability to locate and harvest sources of human and animal nutrition in naturally occurring settings. To achieve these objectives, we are extending five research grants worth $2,000 each to graduate students in Canada (and potentially other locations, as detailed below) who are interested in pursuing the following short-term studies between June 2024 and October 2024. The WFA is based in Kingston, Ontario. Some research could be conducted elsewhere, but a presence in Kingston will be needed.
Research study #1
Automated harvesting of nuts and tree seeds within natural forested ecosystems. This study will investigate the feasibility of identifying wild nuts and seeds in forested environments using available automation systems (off-the-shelf robotics kits). A brief report on the actual or initial design of the initial prototype, including sensors, camera identification, and possible algorithmic identification. Three research grants available.
Research study #2
Wild food bibliography: Compile an annotated bibliography of recent scientific articles, books, or related materials directly related to the identification, harvesting, and consumption of naturally occurring plants suitable for human consumption or animal fodder. Two grants available for 2024.
How to apply
If you are interested, please submit a one-page paragraph detailing which study interests you and how you will meet the research objectives, along with your CV and any other pertinent documents through the form below by June 30, 2024. We will get back to you by July 5. Research work is to be completed by October 2024. Details will be forwarded to grant recipients in early July.
