The Wild Food Association (WFA) is a new non-profit organization focused on developing a more in-depth understanding of the value of naturally occurring sources of nutrition throughout Canada and the world, primarily in the temperate regions of North America, Asia, and Europe. Our initial objectives are twofold: to enhance the availability of data and information regarding wild foods, and to enhance the capability to identify and harvest sources of human and animal nutrition in naturally occurring environments utilizing automated systems (available robotics kits and algorithms).
Most information sources about natural food sources are of two types: information about the practices of aboriginal people and their harvest of naturally occurring plants and animals, and foraging books, articles, and videos intended mostly for individuals interested in collecting wild food for personal interest. Since plants are the main source of food for humans, our focus is on them. Our goal is to provide a broader and more research-based range of information about this topic, and to encourage researchers to pursue relevant work.
Currently, this website houses a preliminary and expanding collection of diverse sources pertaining to numerous aspects of wild food, as well as information regarding the research grants we are offering for the spring and fall of 2024.
